# Backblaze B2, from your Mac

B2 has an S3-compatible API, so AnyBucket connects to it like any S3 store. You need an application key and the region your bucket lives in.

## The short answer

In your Backblaze account, create an **application key** for your bucket and note its **keyID** and **applicationKey**, plus the bucket's **region** (for example `us-west-004`, from its S3 endpoint). In AnyBucket, press **⇧⌘K**, pick **Backblaze B2**, type the region, paste the key ID as the access key and the application key as the secret, and connect. AnyBucket uses the endpoint `https://s3.<region>.backblazeb2.com`.

## Before you start
AnyBucket talks to B2 through its **S3-compatible API**. You need:

- A **bucket**. Its details in the Backblaze web interface show an **S3 endpoint** such as `s3.us-west-004.backblazeb2.com`. The part between `s3.` and `.backblazeb2.com` is the region.
- An **application key** that may read and write that bucket. Backblaze shows a **keyID** and an **applicationKey**; these are the access key ID and secret access key in S3 terms.

## Create an application key
1. Sign in to your Backblaze account and open the page for application keys.
2. Add a new application key. Allow access to the one bucket you'll use, with read and write access.
3. Create it and copy the **keyID** and the **applicationKey**. Backblaze shows the application key only once, so copy it before you leave the page.

## Connect in AnyBucket
1. Press **⇧⌘K** (**File → Connect to Server…**).
2. Under **Cloud Storage**, pick **Backblaze B2**.
3. Type the bucket's **region**, such as `us-west-004`. AnyBucket builds the endpoint `https://s3.us-west-004.backblazeb2.com`.
4. Paste the **keyID** as the access key ID and the **applicationKey** as the secret access key. With **Save Secret in Keychain** on, it goes to your login keychain.
5. Optionally type the bucket name and a nickname, then press **Connect**.

## Back up a folder to B2
B2 is a common home for off-site backups. With AnyBucket:

1. Put the folder from This Mac in one pane and the B2 bucket in the other.
2. Press **⌥F5**. Compare & Sync lists every file that's new, changed or missing on each side.
3. Choose **mirror** to make the bucket match the folder, check the rows, and start it.

Large files go up in parts, and a dropped connection retries on a fresh one. If you quit AnyBucket, the queue picks up again at the next launch. See [sync a folder with a server](https://anybucket.app/guides/sync-folder-with-server).

## Move files to or from another provider
To move a bucket from Amazon S3, Wasabi or Cloudflare R2 to B2, or the other way, open one in each pane, mark the files and press **F5** to copy or **F6** to move. Files stream through a small spool on your Mac; you don't download anything by hand. See [copy files between servers](https://anybucket.app/guides/copy-files-between-servers-mac).

## If it doesn't connect
- **Access denied:** the application key may be limited to another bucket, or be read-only.
- **Nothing listed, or an error about the endpoint:** check the region. It must match the bucket's own S3 endpoint.
- **A transfer stopped:** it waits under **Needs attention** in the Transfers window (⌥⌘T) with its error. See [troubleshooting](https://anybucket.app/support/troubleshooting#stopped-transfers).

## Questions, answered

### Is there a Backblaze B2 app for Mac?

AnyBucket works as one: it connects to B2 through the S3-compatible API, shows a bucket like a folder beside your Mac, and copies, moves and syncs with the keyboard.

### Which region do I type?

The one in your bucket's S3 endpoint: for `s3.us-west-004.backblazeb2.com`, type `us-west-004`.

### Can I keep a folder backed up to B2?

Yes. Compare & Sync (⌥F5) compares the folder with the bucket and mirrors the changes, listing every file before anything moves.

### Which key is the access key and which is the secret?

Backblaze's **keyID** is the access key ID, and its **applicationKey** is the secret access key.
